RECIPE: Gluten Free Egg Custard Tarts
I have always been a massive Egg Custard Tart fan but haven’t eaten one in a very long time. That was until the other day when I made my own Gluten Free Egg Custard Tarts!
You might have recently seen that I put up a post, reviewing Silly Yak Gluten Free Pastry. Well, finding that pastry in my local Tesco was the very reason that I decided to make these Gluten Free Egg Custard Tarts. I am a poor pastry chef, & very rarely get the consistency right, especially now I have to make gluten free pastry! This Silly Yak pastry was so easy to use and I would highly recommend it if you find some in Tesco! (it’s in the chilled pastry section!)
This recipe of course would work with any gluten free pastry you can make or find yourself. It is incredibly simple too. Once the pastry is ready in the tins, the filling is only made up of a few store cupboard ingredients. Egg yolk, sugar & Milk (oh & a little nutmeg for the tops). I am embarrassed to say that before a couple of days ago I had never made my own custard, but this was very straightforward.
My only slight error when making my tarts was forgetting to glaze the pastry with egg before putting them in the oven. Of course this doesn’t matter but it makes the pastry look extra golden!
Anyway here is the recipe, enjoy!
- 1 Pack of Silly Yak Gluten Free Pastry
- 7 Egg Yolks
- 700ml Full Fat Milk
- 90g of Caster Sugar (you could reduce this a little if you want to)
- Whole Nutmegs (for grating on top)
- Extra Gluten Free Flour for rolling out your pastry
- Preheat your oven to 190C.
- Lightly grease some individual muffin/cake tins.
- Roll out your pastry on a lightly (gluten free) floured surface so that you can cut out around 12 discs. My cutter was 11cm across, a slightly smaller one wouldn"t matter but 11cm was ideal.
- Gently fit each of the discs into the moulds, make sure the pastry overlaps the top of the moulds a little.
- To make the egg custard filling beat together 7 egg yolks with the caster sugar until its creamy and slightly paler in colour.
- Warm the milk in a saucepan gently, but don"t let it boil.
- Pour the warm milk over the egg & sugar mix and stir thoroughly. There will likely be lots of bubbles on top.
- Place the mixture into a jug so it is easier to pour.
- Pour the custard into each of the pastry cases, you can fill them almost to the top if you like!
- Grate nutmeg over the top of each tart.
- You might also like to glaze the pastry with a little egg yolk to make it golden!
- Carefully place the tarts in the oven for about 25 minutes. Make sure you don"t overcook them, they will cook in their tins a little more once they are taken out!
- Leave the egg custard tarts to cool for about 30 minutes before removing them from the tin. (Very gently ease them out!)
- Enjoy! I guarantee they will taste amazing :)
- A gluten free egg custard tart can easily be made dairy free too by either creating your own pastry without dairy... or by using a vegan & gluten free ready made pastry. I can recommend Voakes Free From who make Gluten Free & Vegan Pastry.
- For the filling you will just need to use a high fat dairy free alternative to cows milk.
The Gluten Free Egg Custard Tarts emerged looking beautiful. There is nothing better than a homemade tart & I am really proud of my first attempt at making them. The egg custard filling had the exact consistency I was looking for. The grated nutmeg provided the perfect flavour to the custard too.
The Egg Custard Tart is something traditional that I used to enjoy getting from a local bakery & enjoying with the rest of the family. I am so glad that I can do that again now with this Gluten Free Egg Custard recipe. & trust me, even those who can eat gluten will love the gluten free pastry from Silly Yak. (or any other gluten free pastry you make or buy!)
Let me know if you get round to making some gluten free egg custard tarts. & let me know if there are any other pastry dishes you miss.. maybe I can try to recreate some more. Leave your comments below, or on Facebook/Twitter.
Thanks for reading,
Becky xxx

REVIEW: Sukrin Gluten Free & Yeast Free Bread Mix
We would probably all bake our own bread if it was quick, easy & delicious. Well here is one of my favourite gluten free & yeast free bread mixes that doesn’t need a bread maker! The Sukrin Sunflower & Pumpkin Seed Bread Mix!
I tried this bread mix from Sukrin for the first time back in 2013. Whilst I was interning in London, somebody I worked with recommended I try it as it. I then tried it at The Allergy & Free From Show 2013 and loved it. I’ve baked it a few times since; it really is a delicious change from my regular gluten free white bread.
Not only is it gluten free, it is also egg free, sugar free, yeast free & soya free. I know that many folk have issues with yeast in bread mixes so this is a delicious solution. It is also a really high fibre bread with each slice on average containing 6.4g of fibre. Oh & for those of you who care about carbs.. there is only 1 carb per slice!
I enjoy the taste of a bread that is full of seeds, it just seems to have that little added extra. It makes the bread incredibly enjoyable just on its own with a little butter.
Another great thing about this bread mix is that it is ridiculously simple to use. No bread maker required… this was perfect for me, because I am not currently in my own kitchen with my Zero Gluten Baker. All I needed to make this bread in addition to the bread mix was an oven & 250ml of water… they even provide the tin that you cook the bread in! It’s as simple as shouting GLUTEN FREE! Place the bread mix into a bowl, mix in the water. Pour into the tin provided, and cook for 1 hour 20 minutes until the crust is golden.
The bread is by no means a full size loaf that you would use for a full sized sandwich. You could, but personally for me it is my absolute favourite to have alongside some boiled eggs as soldiers or with some soup. I really doubt you will find anything nicer. Oh & it is also amazing with some lovely cheddar on top of it, you’ve got to try it!
I actually bought this Sukrin Bread Mix a little while ago now when it was sold in my local Tesco. I don’t think it is anymore BUT there are plenty of places that do stock Sukrin. Click here to find out where your closest stockist is.. just type in your post code. Or you can buy directly from the Sukrin website.
Please let me know if you have tried this gluten free bread mix from Sukrin before. What did you think of it? What is your favourite free from bread to have with boiled eggs & soup? Let me know by leaving a comment below, or on Facebook/Twitter.
Thanks for watching,
Becky xxx

RECIPE - Gluten Free Banana Bread - Dairy Free & Refined Sugar Free
My banana bread recipe is one of those amazing things that tastes amazing & you can eat as much as you want! My recipe is gluten free, dairy free, refined sugar free & essentially fat free too! It’s perfect with a cuppa, as part of dessert or even to take out with you as a snack. This gluten free banana bread is so simple – you’re going to love it!
So I love baking. I’d bake every day if I could. Similarly to so many folk I aspire to have my own little café one day… I can keep dreaming right?!
I have definitely enjoyed baking even more in the past 5 years since gluten has been off the menu for me and dairy is a no for Mark.
Myself and Mark also have a few other little issues to contend with. As you know, we both suffer with the ‘wonderful’ problem of IBS. For me I really struggle with too much sugar in foods, whether that is natural sugars from fruit or more refined sugars.
Instead, a favourite of ours is a tasty, gluten free banana bread recipe I recently came up with. I have seen many Banana Bread recipes over time and many of them seem fairly healthy, but I wanted to go one step further and make it entirely gluten free, dairy free and safe for our stomachs! That meant no additional sugar – the only sugar coming from the bananas and a very small amount of apple sauce. Also the recipe contains no signs of any butter, margarine or oil. It seemed the perfect cake for us.
It is a very versatile recipe too. We like cinnamon in ours but you don’t have to. You could add nuts if you wanted to as well. For us we keep it simple. It tastes great cold with a comforting cuppa tea or, I have to say, I like to warm it up in the microwave with a little custard. This healthy gluten free banana bread loaf keeps moist and fresh for plenty of time, especially when, I guarantee, it will be eaten incredibly quickly. The combination of tasty and healthy makes you eat slice after slice… after slice!
I guarantee this healthy gluten free banana bread recipe will go down well with those who are gluten free, dairy free & everyone else. It is a delicious, gluten free banana bread that we can’t live without on a rainy, cold Manchester day. I hope you get the chance to give this a go too.
- 4 Ripe Large Bananas
- 4 Tbsp of Apple Sauce (You might choose to add less if you wish)
- 200g Gluten Free Plain Flour
- 1 ¼ Tsps of Gluten Free Baking Powder
- ½ Tsp of Bicarbonate of Soda
- Tsp of Cinnamon (You can add more or less of this, to taste)
- 2 Egg Whites (I used Two Chicks Egg Liquid Egg White - 4 Tbsp does the job!)
- Preheat your oven to 180 C/ 160 Fan.
- Prepare a loaf tin (grease it or use baking parchment).
- In a large bowl, mix together gluten free flour, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and cinnamon.
- Mash 4 ripe bananas. There is no need to make the bananas completely smooth, small chunks of banana give the bread a great texture.
- Add the mashed bananas, egg whites and apple sauce to the dry mixture and stir thoroughly, just until combined.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 50 to 55 minutes. Check the loaf is cooked by inserting a skewer into the centre of the loaf and making sure it comes out clean.
- Turn out onto a cooling rack and allow to cool before eating. (It takes a while but it’s worth the wait!)
- Enjoy!

RECIPE: Gluten Free & Dairy Free Rice Krispie Cakes
This recipe has been requested many times & it is so, so simple. Rice Krispie Cakes are the perfect treat for kids & big kids! These are both Gluten Free & Dairy Free too.
Who was a fan of Rice Krispie Cakes as a child? I often made chocolate rice krispie cakes for school cake sales, they were definitely my favourite! As I got older I started taking rice krispie squares from Kelloggs in my lunchbox. However, up until fairly recently, I don’t think I’ve enjoyed a rice krispie cake in years. If they were simple enough to make when I was really little, then I’m sure I can make some at age 24!
You can of course make cornflake cakes instead if you prefer… I used to love them as well! Just make sure whatever cereal you use, it is gluten free. It is easy to think that regular cornflakes and rice krispies are gluten free when they are not. They contain Barley Malt Extract often, so make sure you ensure yours are gluten free.
Optional extras… well not optional in my opinion are the extra mini marshmallows on top. They provide a lovely soft texture against the crispy cakes. Also, dairy free chocolate drizzled all over the tops of the rice krispie cakes is the perfect finishing touch. Any dairy free chocolate will do, but my absolute favourite is Cocoa Libre. I love all of their products sooo much!
- 50g Dairy Free Spread
- 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
- 200g Marshmallows
- 100g Gluten Free Rice Krispies
- Extra Mini Marshmallows for topping
- Melted Dairy Free Chocolate for topping (I used Cocoa Libre Dairy Free Chocolate)
- Grease a baking tin thoroughly with oil or dairy free spread.
- Melt the dairy free spread over a low heat.
- Once melted add the vanilla extract & the 200g of marshmallows.
- Melt the marshmallows down, continue to do this at a low heat, stirring frequently.
- Once fully melted, remove from heat & stir in your gluten free rice krispies, making sure they are fully coated.
- Pour your mixture into your prepared tin & spread it out evenly (it will be really sticky so try your best!)
- Sprinkle your extra mini marshmallows over the top of it... you might like to press some of them in... they should stick really well though.
- Scatter your melted dairy free chocolate over the top - I do this in quite a messy way by getting spoonfuls of the hot melted chocolate and splashing them down over the rice krispies... if that makes sense!
- I like to then place my tin in the freezer to chill the mix for about an hour. But you can easily just chill it in the fridge for a couple of hours so that it sets.
- Cut into pieces & enjoy! I often keep the rest of them in the fridge before eating, I like them nice and cold!
What are your favourite childhood cakes? What do you remember baking and/or eating when you were really young? Let me know it would be great to recreate some more classics! Let me know if you give these Gluten Free & Dairy Free Rice Krispie Cakes a try. Leave a comment below, or even leave me a picture over on Facebook/Twiter/Instagram.

RECIPE: Gluten Free Banoffee Pie with Dairy Free Coconut Caramel
A Gluten Free Banoffee Pie is a beautiful, delicious heavenly thing. Here is my simple recipe which is also dairy free thanks to a coconut caramel! Perfect for Desserts Week on The Great British Bake Off 2015! Keep scrolling down for a full detailed method & ingredients list!
1) Place your biscuits into a bag & crush them.
2) Melt your dairy free spread and mix into your crushed biscuits.
3) Press your biscuit mix into a loose bottomed tin.
4) After chilling, spread over your Coconut Caramel & chill again!
5) Slice up a few bananas!
6) Place your bananas on top of the caramel
7) Whisk your cream (coconut) until it gets a little stiffer.
8) Give it a taste of course!
9) Spread your whipped cream over your bananas
10) Sprinkle some grated dairy free chocolate on top.
11) Cut a slice (or two!) & enjoy
- - 2 Packets Gluten & Dairy Free Digestive Biscuits (I use Schär Digestive Biscuits)
- - 120g Dairy Free Spread
- - 4 tbsp Hey Boo Coconut Caramel (or any other coconut caramel... if you can have dairy.. you can use a regular caramel)
- - 3 Bananas (sliced)
- - 1 400ml can of Coconut Milk to make Coconut Cream (you can chill a tin of coconut milk in the fridge & then scoop out the solid coconut cream, leaving the water behind)
- - Dairy Free Chocolate (grated)
- Place your biscuits into a bag & crush them. Using a rolling pin is perfect for this. Once crushed, place in a bowl.
- Melt your dairy free spread and mix into your crushed biscuits, coating them.
- Press your biscuit mixture into your loose bottomed tin (I like it really thick!).
- Chill the mixture for around 10-20 minutes in the fridge or freezer. (I often chuck it in the freezer for a shorter period!)
- Spread a layer of your caramel onto your biscuit base to the edges.
- Chill your biscuit base and caramel in the fridge for about an hour.
- After an hour you can now remove the looser bottom of the tin from the sides, it will make it easier to not have the tin around the pie now.
- Slice your bananas and place on top of the caramel. (Because my base is often really thick, I like to double/triple layer my bananas too!)
- Whisk your coconut cream till it is fairly stiff and spoon it on top of the bananas. (You probably won"t need it all)
- Grate a little dairy free chocolate on the top.
- Keep chilled until ready to serve...
- Enjoy!
- If you are only Gluten Free then you can make this with regular caramel and regular cream if you wish! (Though I LOVE the coconut caramel!)
- You can use 1 packet of digestives for a thinner base HOWEVER, I love a super thick base!
I used to make Mark & I a gluten free banoffee pie quite a lot a few years ago before Mark realised that he was intolerant to the lactose in dairy. I haven’t in a while because of the dairy in both the caramel and the cream. However, the other day I decided, enough was enough & decided to tackle the Banoffee Beast!
A gluten free Banoffee Pie is a very simple thing to make, & is definitely no harder to make than a regular Banoffee Pie… it also tastes exactly the same! Making a Banoffee Pie dairy free too is slightly more complicated. Both the caramel and the cream will need to be adjusted from a regular recipe.
Whilst making your own dairy free caramel isn’t necessarily a difficult task (you can opt for using a date based recipe or a coconut milk one); I always think of my gluten free Banoffee Pie as a quick and easy dessert, so I don’t often want to spend time making a caramel myself. I don’t want to think about it I just want to spread it over that delicious gluten free biscuit base & enjoy it!
Fortunately, I found a delicious Coconut Caramel that you can buy in a jar recently in M&S, by the American brand, Hey Boo Jams. In America you can buy Hey Boo more easily in stores or even directly off their site. In the UK I have only so far seen it in M&S. It might be expensive, but if you don’t want to make your own dairy free caramel, I can assure you it is worth it!
The cream on top of the gluten free Banoffee Pie needs to be free of lactose too for Mark. If you are lactose intolerant only, rather than having a dairy allergy, then you could use the LactoFree Cream. You can whip it up very easily with a electric whisk. If however you don’t want to use LactoFree Cream you might instead choose to use Coconut Cream instead like we did. Coconut cream is really easy to use, and it tastes great. Just leave a tin of coconut milk in the fridge for a good few hours, scoop out the hardened more solid coconut cream & whisk with an electric whisk until smooth, it won’t take anymore than a couple of minutes. Simple!
I really hope you give this recipe a go. It is one of our favourites and I love making it. Let me know if you do. & also let me know if you try out the Hey Boo Coconut Caramel. Oh & if you have any other tips for a great dairy free caramel and whipped cream.. let me know too! Just leave a comment below, or on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram.

3 Delicious Ways to Enjoy Alpro"s Coconut & Almond Milk
Recently I discovered that Alpro have brought out a new dairy alternative… Coconut & Almond Milk. I am a regular Coconut Milk user & have Almond Milk with my cereal so I was very up for giving this a try. Here are a few of the ways I used it & my thoughts:
1) Smoothie (& not just any smoothie either!)
Alpro Coconut & Almond Milk has probably stolen the show as my favourite milk to put in a smoothie. It is incredibly creamy in flavour yet it is low in both fat & sugar. I made a smoothie at the weekend using the milk & adding to it, pear, frozen banana & a tiny scoop of dairy free vanilla ice cream! If you prefer to keep the ice cream out you could instead use a little more frozen banana & a drop of vanilla extract. It was the perfect drink for a sunny afternoon & the coconut & almond milk worked an absolute treat. (I’ll get the full recipe for my Pear, Banana, Vanilla Smoothie up for you in the near future!)
2) Tropical Coconut & Almond Rice Porridge
I have always been a huge porridge fan but sadly cannot tolerate oats. Instead I enjoy using rice flakes to make my porridge. (I totally recommend trying Delicious Alchemy‘s Rice Flakes they are delicious!) I’ve never tried a coconut based milk to make my porridge with but this will certainly not be my last time! The coconut & almond flavours comes through to create an almost tropical flavoured porridge. The milk brings enough flavour to not even need to add any other sweetness to it. However, I couldn’t resist a few pieces of fresh pineapple to keep with the tropical theme. Rice Flakes also make a great ‘rice pudding’ style dessert & with the coconut & almond milk it is heavenly.
3) Cereal
And last but not least, quite simply, Alpro’s Coconut & Almond Milk works a dream with your cereal. It makes even the plainest of cereals feel that little bit more indulgent (without the indulgent nutritional values!). I am a huge fan of Dove’s Farm Gluten Free Cereal Flakes & combined with this milk I have now found my perfect everyday breakfast during the week. It is great to be able to make such a delicious breakfast so quickly!
So…
Overall this is a great little concept from Alpro. I mean, both Almond Milk & Coconut are hot property in the food world at the moment, so to combine this makes sense in more ways than one. The most important way that it makes sense is the flavour. Whilst the coconut provides a really tropical feel to the drink, the almond combines incredibly well to almost tone down the richness, & subtly lighten the flavour up. Once you try it, I guarantee you will know what I mean!
Of course, importantly the coconut & almond drink is also gluten free, dairy free & 100% plant based. It is a milk that is blended to perfection & works really well in the 3 ways I have described above. However, I am pretty sure there a mountain of other ways that you could make the most out of this milk. Pancakes spring to mind for instance… with some caramelised bananas and pineapples… yes please!
Let me know if you have any other suggestions as to how I could best use this milk & how YOU would use it. What did you think of the flavour? Just drop a comment below, or on Facebook/Twitter.

My IBS Diary Week 1 Update
Welcome to My IBS Diary Week 1! I hope you enjoy it, & make sure you subscribe to me (for free!) to be notified of more IBS & Gluten Free Videos every week!
As you might of seen in my previous post on my IBS solution, (fingers crossed!) & also my video on the same topic; I have turned to something else to help my IBS pains. I have turned to Symprove! Symprove is a probiotic. Unlike other probiotics it is a water-based multi-strain supplement that contains 4 unique strains of live activated bacteria. To find out more as to why I decided to try Symprove out, please take a look at my first post on Symprove (Click here!).
So basically I thought I would do a little diary upon completing each week of my Symprove journey! I don’t expect fast progress… or any for that matter. I just live in hope that this might just be the answer! Each week I will also talk about different things to do with my IBS, so comment below if you have any questions. So what better place to start than WEEK 1!
Week One
So week 1 was a bit of a different one for me as I have been having a week at my parents house to celebrate my brothers 21st birthday & generally just relax! I brought bottle number 1 of Symprove with me & have taken it every single morning before I do anything. (You must always wait at least 10 minutes before eating anything after taking it)
Day 1 - Well I guess all I have to report today is that… it didn’t taste bad! I really thought it was going to taste awful! I never like the idea of taking a ‘new liquid’ for the first time! It just reminds me of not wanting to take medicine as a child (sorry Mum for refusing to open my mouth so many times!) I actually quite like the taste of Symprove, I think we are going to be good friends!
Day 2 - Again another tasty Symprove start to the day, no changes from usual today, but it is very early days!
Day 3 – My stomach has started to become quite noisy, it feels like things are happening. This is exciting as I have a very slow moving digestive system… I’m sure IBS-C sufferers will sympathise with this! My stomach never seems to get moving and it needs a boost. I am hoping that the increase in good & balanced bacteria that Symprove should help with will see me taking more regular trips to the toilet!
Day 4 - As if like magic, I actually was able to go to the toilet this morning. I feel better in the stomach today after that, & don’t feel so heavy/lethargic. The gurgling stomach is still there, I’m just taking this as a good thing!
Day 5 - I have seen a pattern over the last few days, I seem to be more hungry. This is rare for me, I really do eat 99% of the time when I am not hungry, simply because my food never seems to break down and leave my stomach. It is a great feeling to sit down to a big dinner with my tummy rumbling!
Day 6 - So today I have had a few pains and some bloating (nothing worse than my regular… which is pretty bad). I woke up not feeling so great. However, in terms of positives I was able to each lunch today without the pain getting any worse. Most days I can get a bit down after lunch due to the bloating pains increasing madly, today it was a little better.
Day 7 – Suffering a little after a bit of a bad food day on my part.
Overall IBS Diary Week 1…
So with Week 1 over, I can safely say that I will definitely be continuing with Symprove! I didn’t expect to even feel 1% different in a week, however I have felt some changes which is definitely a good thing. I can’t wait to get started on Week 2 & beyond!
These posts and videos are going to vary each week. I plan on giving updates on how I’m feeling and also show you what I am up to. I might show you what I’m eating if it’s exciting enough! Let me know what you think & how your IBS is treating you this week. If you have any questions you can leave a comment below, or on Facebook/Twitter.

Gluten Free is coming to Iceland Foods!
So it would seem that Iceland Foods are following the many other supermarkets in providing a Gluten Free range! But, where are they heading first on their Gluten Free journey? Ireland! However, keep your eyes peeled for Iceland’s Gluten Free range in a store near you in the future!
Iceland Foods are renowned for their frozen food ranges at extremely low prices. But until now they have not provided an actual Gluten Free Range. Some of their products have been naturally Gluten Free, but not made specifically for a Gluten Free diet.
Do YOU shop at Iceland? If you do… what do you think of Iceland’s move into the Gluten Free market? If you don’t… would YOU consider choosing to shop at Iceland once these products become available in a store close to you?
Of course for now Iceland’s Gluten Free Range is only available in Ireland. But we don’t imagine this to last too long. The UK market is too lucrative for Iceland to hold back on… it’s only a matter of time!
So… what sorts of products are in the Gluten Free Range at Iceland?
1) Goodfella’s Gluten Free Pizza
So Goodfella’s are getting involved in the Gluten Free market now. I can’t wait to try these! Having spoken to the folks at Goodfella’s I can confirm we are going to getting our hands on these gluten free pizzas in the UK in the not too distant future!
2) Big Al’s Kitchen Gluten Free Chicken Goujons
These look delicious and look to be the perfect addition to any freezer! The perfect gluten free option when you haven’t had the chance to get anything else in, they’re quick and easy… just what Iceland wants to be!
3) Dohertys Gluten Free Sausages, Burgers and Meatballs
So…
There you have it, Iceland are moving into the Gluten Free market. It will be interesting to see if they make any of their own branded products gluten free. Iceland pride themselves on their own brand ranges such as their party food. Could Iceland bring out a Gluten Free Party Food Range? Watch this space I guess!
As I said, Iceland’s Gluten Free Range is only available in Ireland at present. I know so many people want to get their hands on it… I’m sure it isn’t far away now! I know for sure that Goodfella’s Gluten Free Pizzas will definitely be coming across the Irish Sea in the not too distant future!
Let me know what you think of this news from Iceland. If you are from Ireland, why not less us know what you think, having tried the new range! Leave a comment below, or on Facebook/Twitter.

#1 Is this the cure for my IBS?
My IBS (hopeful) Solution... Symprove!
Irritable Bowel Syndrome has been a part of my life for far too many years now. I am determined to try out anything that will help my stomach cope better. I don’t just want a pain relief, I want to try out something that will help my gut bacteria balance… so I am going to try out Symprove.
Click here to view my FIRST IBS SOLUTION VIDEO
I have been struggling with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) for a number of years now. It is such a pain on a regular basis & I find it is the one thing that I cannot 100% manage. My Gluten Intolerance is a very manageable issue, I feel in control of that, because I am simply very careful never to eat gluten. My IBS on the other hand, has a vast array of triggers which I find much harder to control. Therefore, IBS really can affect my life on a daily basis, in one way or another.
My gluten intolerance & IBS, I believe, both arose due to that lovely little thing known as stress. Before I had any digestive issues I truly believed ‘stress’ was nonsense. However, I can safely say that stress is a nasty piece of work which really can affect your gut in a big way.
Stress gives me stomach cramps, bloating & I also seem to find it a lot harder to tolerate certain foods. The list of foods that my body fails to tolerate seems to have grown extensively over the past 5 years or so, to the point where I really do just look like a fussy eater. If I am honest, if it was only gluten I couldn’t eat I would be so happy, I just can’t deal with the long list of other foods!
For example (this is a list accurate for my stomach in July 2015):
- All forms of gluten & anything containing gluten (obviously)
- Oats (so porridge, oat biscuits, flapjacks are all out)
- Alcohol
- Caffeine
- Legumes (Beans, Lentils, Peas)
- Onions (The DEVIL!)
- Mushrooms & sweetcorn
- Lettuce (yeah salad is also out for me)
- ALL green vegetables (except courgette)
- Dried fruit
- Fruit (especially ones with skin, seeds & higher sugar content)
- High sugar foods (condiments are out.. no ketchup or BBQ sauce)
- Tomato can also set it off
- Sorbitol containing foods
And that is just off the top of my head! Consuming any of the foods listed for me personally is just not going to end well. As you can imagine, I get used to it, but when I go out for a meal or visit someone, it can be quite a test for them & me.
I have been to the doctor, had scans etc, been given loads of medication to help reduce the pain and bloating (some works better than others)… BUT… I don’t want pain relief, ultimately I want to solve the problem, not cover it up.
To me it has always felt like I don’t have the right digestive enzymes, or rather, as I have now read about, the correct balance of bacteria in my gut. Surely if I could balance my gut bacteria, my IBS symptoms could at least be slightly reduced? I have tried a number of probiotics in the past, but have failed to see any long term results. I had all but given up, until the other day…
Mark has been taking Symprove on & off for the past couple of years. He has seen improvements when using it, but then got lazy & stopped! (Don’t ask me why if you see improvements!!) Anyway we have both decided to give Symprove a go now, for real, nothing half arsed… and see how we get on.
So… what is Symprove?
Symprove is a water-based multi-strain supplement that contains 4 unique strains of live activated bacteria. These include: L. rhamnosus, E. faecium, L. acidophilus, and L. plantarum. Normally a healthy gut would already contain all four of these, however when it doesn’t, it can soon become unbalanced. I thought this video was really useful:
Other probiotics I have tried in the past have been either within a dairy product or as a tablet. These I now realise get destroyed too much before reaching the part of the gut that needs them. However, Symprove, being water based (containing live and active bacteria) does not get destroyed and gets exactly where it needs to. I thought this diagram explained everything better than I could to. Basically, for any probiotic to be effective in restoring the balance of bacteria in your gut, it has to do 3 simple things:
Symprove really interests me, & intrigues me. I am prepared to try anything if it will help my stomach out & thus make me a happier human being! I am going to try out the Symprove 12 Week Challenge.. I understand there are no quick fixes when it comes to restoring the balance of bacteria in my gut. It has been so bad for so long… 12 weeks doesn’t even seem a long time! I thought I would take you on that journey with me with a combination of posts & video updates on my YouTube Channel (Click here to view my Gluten Free Videos).
If Symprove helps my IBS you will never hear the end of me raving about it! I am excited! Live bacteria.. get in my belly & balance!
It would be great to hear stories from others if you have ever tried Symprove or other probiotics. Every person who suffers with IBS will have slightly different issues to the next person, so I guess probiotics will effect different people in a different way. Oh & also feel free to leave any comments about your IBS problems or success stories below as a comment, or on Facebook/Twitter. It is better to deal with issues together than apart.
